Job Description

The Assistant Editior, Philanthropy works with the Associate Director of Editorial Content to assist the Division of Philanthropy in raising $400+ million annually by supporting in the development of three major donor publications and by driving the compilation, creation, management and deployment of compelling and consistent content and messaging in print and online communications, across the Division.  Responsible for assisting the entire Division with reaching financial goals, the position reports to the Associate Director of Editorial Content, Philanthropy Communications.  The internal title for this role is Senior Writer, Philanthropy Communications.

The onboarding of this role will include a comprehensive training process which includes completion of online modules, shadowing colleagues, as well as hands-on learning experiences throughout the first calendar year in the role.

This position is considered remote, 0-1 days onsite at 10 Brookline Place, Brookline, MA each week. DFCI guidelines state that employees must reside in New England: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont.

• The Assistant Editior, Philanthropy must employ excellent writing, research and editing, as well as project managements skills to tell the story of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund on a variety of media platforms, translating sometimes complex scientific information for a lay readership
• Assist in all aspects of the Impact donor magazine (4x/year)  including: 
  • Research and write letters for publication on behalf of the Senior Vice President and Chief Philanthropy Officer; the President and CEO of DFCI; Deputy Chief Philanthropy Officer and other senior leaders 
  • Research and write articles and other content, including completing interviews with high-level donors and senior faculty 
  • Review and edit content assigned to other writers as well as being point person for the writers 
  • Secure photography and logos 
  • Circulate copy and layouts for approval 
  • Work with Philanthropy Communications Design and Production teams to ensure timely and cost-effective design, approval, printing, and mailing 
  • Work with Digital Marketing to post the publication online and announce via email 
  • Develop concepts, script, and understand and assist with video production as necessary to bring the digital versions to life 
  • Liaise with members of the Donor Experience and Engagement (DE&E) team as appropriate. 
• Manage content that can be deployed across the Division in print and online, as proof points of Institute excellence and the impact of donor generosity:  
  • Monitor resources within and outside the Institute for news of breakthroughs, awards, important initiatives, etc.; and for compelling stories of Dana-Farber patients, donors, and participants 
  • Devise strategies to capture and deploy all elements of content (copy, photography, video) on all appropriate platforms 
  • Actively seek ways to leverage both new and existing content online, to enhance audience engagement and increase online revenue, in collaboration with Digital Marketing 
• Serve as an additional Philanthropy Communications liaison with DFCI Communications 
  • Review and circulate for approval stories written by DFCI Communications staff for Communications-owned channels such as Inside the Institute, DFCI Online, and the Insight blog 
  • Select and supply news items for JimmyFund.org
• Work collaboratively with colleagues on high-level writing assignments, such as Division-wide brochures, op-eds, collateral materials, talk points, creative briefs, external marketing for campaigns, and special projects 
• Help to maintain and update Publications project strategies, procedures, style guides, organizing principles, and training documents; provide training to new staff 
• Other writing and content production and management projects, as assigned. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

N/A

Bachelor?s degree in English, science, communications, marketing, or related field required. Three to five years writing and publications or marketing experience in a non-profit, agency, or related industry required. Experience in a Philanthropy/non-profit setting preferred; experience in a health care or other medical or scientific setting also preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and verbal communication skills. Must be able to understand and translate complex scientific concepts for a lay audience. Must have excellent listening and interpersonal skills. Must have familiarity with online and social platforms. Must be flexible and able to manage multiple projects with short-term and long-term deadlines simultaneously and on tight timeframes.
