Job Description

Chief Financial & Administrative Officer Location Remote : The Chief Financial and Administrative Officer (CFAO) is responsible for optimizing the financial and operational health of The Jed Foundation (JED). Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and also responsible to the Board of Directors, the CFAO oversees the finances for the organization and is responsible for supervising and strategically managing the Finance, Technology, HR Operations, and Legal functions to ensure the organization's financial stability, operational efficiency, and legal compliance in service to the organization's mission.

Key Responsibilities Financial Management Mission: The CFAO is accountable to lead JED's financial operations, achieving financial sustainability at the $25-$30 million annual revenue level by 2026. In addition, the CFAO will optimize the financial planning and analysis (FP&A) functions and systems of the organization to ensure best in class financial discipline and integrity.

  • Lead the annual budgeting process that includes working with JED leadership to: provide timely and accurate budgets, financial reports and analyses of financial trends to ensure accountability and alignment with organizational objectives, and to enable and inform leadership and the Board and other senior executives to make high quality, informed decisions.
  • Monitor financial performance and identify areas for improvement or cost-saving opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and systems to ensure adequate controls and visibility to financial data.
  • Manage cash flow, investments, and risk management strategies, maximizing return on investment while mitigating risk.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, including tax, grant, and accounting standards.
  • Ensure expense controls, policies and procedures.
  • Lead financial audits and coordinate with external auditors.
  • Serve as the senior leader liaison to the Board Finance Committee and Board Audit Committee.

  • Supervise/partner with Chief People and Equity Officer to ensure smooth HR Operations of the People and Equity function, including:

    • Ensuring employees feel valued and treated fairly.
    • Implement a highly effective candidate attraction and onboarding program.
    • Ensuring JED hires the highest quality, best fit employees for open positions.
    • Development and implementation of human resource policies and procedures.
    • Recruitment, onboarding, and retention efforts to attract and retain top talent.
    • Manage employee benefits programs and ensure compliance with employment laws.
    • Foster a positive organizational culture that embodies and puts into action JED's Guiding Principles and Shared Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Antiracism.
    • Address employee relations issues and contribute to professional development initiatives.
  • Note: People and Equity also has a reporting line to the CEO, with a focus on strategy, culture and equity.
Contract Management, Risk Management, and Legal Mission: Own and optimize all legal affairs of JED by providing proactive, accurate and expeditious legal advice that facilitates the achievement of business objectives and continuously support, educate and advise employees on how to develop and implement highly productive initiatives that meet the standards of the law, and ensure low risk, high-efficiency operations.
  • Supervise/partner with staff and third parties to ensure smooth day-to-day operations of the contract, risk management, and legal function, including:
    • Provide leadership of effective contract management processes, including review and negotiation; timely, accurate reporting; proper financial controls; budget management and performance tracking.
    • Oversee the development and implementation of legal policies and procedures, identifying and addressing legal issues as related to contracting, compliance and risk mitigation; supervise in-house and external counsel and contracting personnel unrelated to employment and labor.
    • Support the Chief People & Equity Officer in their oversight of employment and labor law attorneys.
    • Proactively seek to reduce external legal expenses.
    • Ensure JED's intellectual property is protected and enforced.
    • Stay informed about relevant laws and regulations affecting the nonprofit sector.
    • Ensure compliance with applicable laws.
Information Technology, Facilities, and Office Administration Mission: Proactively ensure that Jed employees and programs leverage technology to optimize communications and operations.
  • Supervise/partner with Chief Technology Officer to ensure smooth day-to-day operations of the organization and ability of staff to be productive and efficient, leveraging appropriate tools and technology, including:
    • Plan for and implement continuous improvement of IT infrastructure in order to ensure a consistent and secure environment.
    • Ensure institutional records are maintained in an accessible yet secure manner and oversee records retention policies and procedures.
    • Implement and maintain cybersecurity policies and strategies; provide regular training to mitigate risk while avoiding service interruptions

Skills Knowledge and Expertise

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business administration, or a related field; MBA or CPA preferred.
  • Extensive experience (10+ years) in financial management, with a significant portion in a CFO leadership role.
  • Proven experience in managing human resources, IT, and legal functions.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles and compliance requirements.
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting software Sage Intacct; experience with Concur, Paychex, Salesforce preferred
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to think strategically and contribute to organizational decision-making.
  • Strengths in partnering with executive leadership and functional/department heads, to proactively ensure an effective financial, technology and legal perspective is provided across the organization.
  • Familiar with effective organizational practices and project management, they/he/she will bring a record of success in both high-level strategic thinking and operationalizing a vision across an organization

Pay Ranges / Location / Travel Information

Pay Ranges: The range listed on this job posting is based on JED's compensation posting ranges. Salaries may be higher or lower depending on experience and geographic location. Location/Travel Information: Please note that this position is largely remote but will require retreat/business meetings at JED's central office in NYC or other locations as designated by JED leadership. Additional travel may be required.
