Job Description:

Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, invites applications for a part-time position to teach art history during the 2025-26 Academic Year, (starting August 2025). There is potential for contract renewal beyond the 2025-26 academic year.

We seek a candidate with a masters level degree (PhD or ABD preferred) in art history, specializing in any area of art history except medieval and early modern European art. The ideal candidate will teach three courses during the year: one section of Global Art in Perspective (see course description below) each semester and an upper-level course in their area of specialization. We will also consider candidates who are able to teach fewer than three sections.

Global Art in Perspective course description: Works of art from around the world examined thematically and chronologically as visual evidence of cultural heritage. 30 students maximum. (This is a general intro to art history course so there is lots of flexibility in terms of content and approach).

No research or campus service is expected in this position. However, part-time faculty are welcome to be involved in departmental and campus activities beyond their teaching responsibilities. All faculty are invited to engage in professional development and mentoring opportunities during their time at Augustana College.

Requirements:

A Masters in Art History is required. Ph.D. or ABD is preferred.

Experience in teaching at the college level is desirable, but not required.

Additional Information:

Courses at Augustana are four credits each.

Compensation and Benefits:

• $1400 per credit for part-time instructors without a terminal degree.
• $1500 per credit for part-time instructors with a terminal degree.
• (Compensation is contingent on meeting the enrollment threshold, and is reduced if minimum enrollments are not met.)
• At 12 credits per year, this position is not benefits eligible.
