Job Description

Under the general direction and supervision of the Associate Vice President of the Lincoln Campus, the Safety & Security Coordinator provides leadership and oversight for campus-wide safety and security operations on the Lincoln campus as well as the Wahoo and Plattsmouth Learning Centers. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Lincoln Campus, and working closely with the Vice President of Campus Operations & Development, this role serves as the primary resource for all safety and security matters. The Coordinator is responsible for delivering operational support, technical guidance, and training to campus security personnel, faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

This position plays a central role in supporting campus administration, collaborating with the Information Services division, and advancing College-wide safety and security initiatives. Responsibilities include developing and implementing safety procedures, coordinating emergency preparedness and disaster recovery efforts, overseeing compliance with regulations, and ensuring a secure learning and working environment.
Beyond assigned campus duties, the Coordinator is entrusted with College-wide responsibilities such as fire safety, facility safety and remodeling liaison, Clery and Title IX compliance, safety handbook updates, long-range and strategic planning support, community and law enforcement partnerships, and staff scheduling and training. The role also oversees reporting systems, safety technology updates (e.g., cameras, telecommunications, alert systems), budget monitoring, staff performance input, and the delivery of professional development in safety and security practices.

Through proactive planning, effective communication, and collaborative leadership, the Safety & Security Coordinator ensures that the College community is supported by robust safety programs and a culture of preparedness. This is a full-time regular position.

Essential Functions

Clery Act Compliance

  1. Ensure compliance with the Clery Act by compiling and verifying crime statistics for the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report.
  2. Maintain the Daily Crime Log with timely, accurate entries and guaranteed public access in accordance with federal law.

Campus Security Leadership

  1. Supervise, direct, and evaluate Public Safety Officers and contracted law enforcement/security staff, including scheduling and duty assignments.
  2. Serve as lead liaison with law enforcement, fire officials, emergency responders, and community safety organizations.
  3. Provide expertise in physical security, personal safety, and crime prevention.

Emergency Preparedness & Crisis Management

  1. Develop and maintain knowledge of emergency and crisis management plans.
  2. Lead the implementation of emergency, disaster, and continuity of operations response plans.
  3. Coordinate and participate in campus-wide emergency drills, crisis simulations, and recovery planning.
  4. Respond to and de-escalate incidents, providing guidance and leadership during emergencies.

Training, Education & Awareness

  1. Plan, facilitate, and document safety and security training for employees, adjuncts, and students, including new hire orientation and annual in-service training.
  2. Maintain and share security resources through College websites, bulletins, and safety communication platforms.
  3. Encourages safety awareness that promotes a welcoming culture for all.

Facilities, Technology & Safety Systems

  1. Serve as a resource for safety and security considerations in facility remodeling, expansions, and new construction.
  2. Oversee fire safety initiatives, hazardous chemical inventories, and compliance with safety regulations.
  3. Coordinate with Information Services on video surveillance, telecommunications, alert systems, and other security technologies.
  4. Recommend and oversee the purchase, installation, and maintenance of safety equipment and supplies.

Compliance, Reporting & Communication

  1. Review, investigate, and document safety and security incidents, accidents, and hazards.
  2. Manage safety reporting systems (e.g., TIPS, Regroup, Alertus) and provide timely reports and analysis to administration.
  3. Partner with College leadership and Public Information to coordinate media communications on safety-related issues.
  4. Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and the College Safety Handbook in alignment with state and federal regulations.

Planning, Budget & Administration

  1. Provide input on safety and security budgets, staffing needs, and long-range planning.
  2. Support the development and annual updates of strategic and operational plans.
  3. Lead and participate in safety committees and teams at both the campus and College-wide levels.
  4. Contribute to performance evaluations for assigned staff and contracted personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Associate’s Degree (or greater) in Criminal Justice, Emergency Management, Criminology, Pre-Law, Occupational Safety, or a directly related field*
  2. Two (2) years of related professional work experience in law enforcement, security, safety, emergency response, fire services, emergency preparedness, safety/security training, or a directly related field, which includes the supervision, oversight, management, and/or coordination of others.
  3. Must be able to successfully complete (& maintain) all required background checks, certifications, training, & verifications required for the position.

*Directly related work experience in law enforcement, security, safety, emergency response, fire services, emergency preparedness, safety/security training or a directly related field, or a directly related field may substitute for a degree on a year-for-year basis.
